Preventing Rust: How Good Rubber Seals Protect Your Restoration

20 May 2025

Back to all articles

You can spend a fortune on paint and panel — but perished rubber will rust it out from the inside. Seals are cheap insurance.

Rust needs two things: bare metal and trapped moisture. Perished seals deliver both — they let water in and then hold it against the metal. That is why so many restored cars quietly rust behind fresh paint: the rubber was never renewed.

Seal the rust traps

The worst offenders are windscreen and rear window rubbers, door and boot seals, and the drain channels in doors and sills. Renew the rubber and keep those drains clear, and water leaves the car instead of sitting in it.

Fresh rubber is cheap insurance

A full set of seals costs a fraction of one rust repair. Fitting new rubber during a restoration — while the metal is clean and accessible — protects everything you have just paid to do.
