DIY Rear Window Rubber Fitting Instructions
Tools you will need:
- Windscreen rubber lockstrip insertion tool
- Chicken sticks / plastic spatulas
Note: this seal will appear to be too big for the glass if you try to fit the rubber seal to the glass before installing the seal to the body of the ute!
The correct fitting procedure for re-installing your rear window to all HQ-HJ-HX-HZ & WB utes and one tonners is to fit the rubber to the body first. Do not attempt a rope/string installation procedure for the HQ-WB utes, as this is the incorrect procedure for these models. After you push the window seal onto the body of the ute, around the lip of the back window opening, place the glass into the rubber bottom-first, then use windscreen fitters' "chicken strips" (plastic spatulas) to work the glass into the rubber.
This procedure will only take a few minutes and requires no tradie tricks or additional know-how — it's simple and effective when done correctly. The last part of your re-installation is to fit the locking strip / spreader strip into the groove in the outside back of the rubber.
Hopefully you have a proper windscreen rubber lockstrip insertion tool — using a screwdriver to fit the lockstrip is a slow and difficult process, and is not recommended.
